Solo RPG's and an Oracle System
I recently started experimenting with playing some Solo RPG (Journaling) games. These were quite fun to do and seem like a good was to develop writing skills as well. The games provide a foundation for creative exploration by giving a setting, a set of challenges and some constraints.

I played Exclusion Zone Botanist which has you exploring a corrupted botanical area and journalling (and drawing!) the kinds of things you find. As you go deeper into the area there is a chance you get infected and so may not be able to make it back. This creates a nice sense of tension and jeopardy and I was surprised how real this felt, despite only playing by myself.

I also played Lost Ways which has you crashed on a strange planet and trying to find your way out while meeting various challenges along the way. It is a bit more contemplative (at least my playthrough was) and you get a lot more items and things to play with. It felt a bit more gamey than the Botanist one, which was more creative.
I found that the journalling systems are very nice for getting you to role play, which is a big hurdle to get over when playing solo.
I got interested in Oracle systems - things that give answers to questions about your environment, character and story. The two examples above have things baked into their rules but there are some more general ones.
An impressive one was Cozy Solo RPG Card Oracle System which has a huge set of options which are chosen with dice or card decks. I played with this on some test scenarios and found it to be very intuitive and easy to use.">Cozy Solo RPG Card Oracle System">Cozy Solo RPG Card Oracle System which has a huge set of options which are chosen with dice or card decks. I decided to experiment with creating my own computer based system on top of the Oracle tables and put this up on this site. I may try to expand and integrate some other systems in there also.
